The feminine may be a mere variant (if old from Old Dutch *wāga, from Proto-West Germanic *wāgu, from Proto-Germanic *wēgō), or it may be due to a merger with another word with an original short vowel, which is attested in Middle High German wage (“movement, shaking”), Old High German waga. See German Woge for more.
