Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese traiçon, from Latin trāditiōnem (a giving up, handing over, surrender, delivery, tradition), from trādō (give up, hand over, deliver over, betray, verb), from trāns- (over, across) +‎ (give) (from Proto-Indo-European *deh₃- (to give)). By surface analysis, trair +‎ -ção. Doublet of tradição. Cognate with Galician traizón, Spanish traición, French trahison and English treason.
