From Middle Dutch toeven, from Old Dutch [Term?], from Proto-Germanic *tōbjaną, from Proto-Indo-European *dobʰ-éie-, see also Sanskrit दिप्सति (dipsati, to deceive). Cognate with Low German töven, Swedish töva.
