[edit]Etymology
[edit]Shorto proposed that this may have been loaned from Khmu, by comparing its element thốt with Thin Khmu [script needed] (tŭt) & Yuan Khmu [script needed] (tu:t, “plant, tree, trunk, stem”);[1] however, Hoàng Xuân Việt (2006) proposes that this is from Khmer ត្នោត (tnaot).[2] Ultimately from Proto-Mon-Khmer *tn(oo)t ~ tnu(u)t (“sugar palm”); another cognate is Central Mnong tɒ:m no:t.[1]
The cluster-breaking mechanism, responsible for doublets like thằn lằn "(lizard") and trăn ("python")[3] (< *k-lən < *tlan (“python”)) might also have broken thốt nốt's proto-form's *tn- cluster as well.
