[edit]Etymology
[edit]Sino-Vietnamese word from 失實, with the Central-Southern reading of the second character.
Some dictionary definitions seem to suggest that the second is not from 實/实 (shí), but the homophonous thiệt (“mistreated, getting the short end of the stick”), however, even if that is the case, there would still be obvious contamination from the Sino-Vietnamese morpheme.
This is the only case where a Sino-Vietnamese compound with thiệt became widely adopted by all dialects.
