[edit]Literally, “to cover the sun with the sieve”. Perhaps after Arabic غَطَّى الشَّمْسَ بِالْغِرْبالِ (ḡaṭṭā š-šamsa bi-l-ḡirbāli), whence Maltese għatta x-xemx bl-għarbiel (“to try to conceal something that is bound to come out”).
