[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *sterh₃-. Cognate with Ancient Greek στόρνυμι (stórnumi, “scatter”), στρατός (stratós, “army, people, body of men”), Old English strewian (English strew) and Latin sternō, strāges, strāmen and torus.
