Etymology

Borrowing from Ancient Greek σῑγμοειδής (sīgmoeidḗs, of the shape of sigma), from σῖγμᾰ (sîgma, sigma) +‎ -ο- (-o-) +‎ -ειδής (-eidḗs, -oid, -like); Equivalent to sigma +‎ -oid. Compare with French sigmoïde.
