Etymology

Inherited from Ottoman Turkish سیرك (seyrek, open, wide apart, loosely woven, rare),[1] from Proto-Turkic *sedrek (gappy, rare, perforated), from *sedre- (to be rare, to have wide intervals).[2][3] By surface analysis, seyre- +‎ -k. Cognates with Azerbaijani seyrək, Bashkir һирәк (hirək), Kazakh сирек (sirek), Kyrgyz сейрек (seyrek), Tatar сирәк (siräk), Turkmen seýrek, Uzbek siyrak.
