Finnish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Finnic *sarvi (compare Estonian sarv), from Proto-Finno-Ugric *śarwe (compare Erzya сюро (śuro) and Hungarian szarv), which in turn is a loan from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćr̥Hwa-,[1] compare Avestan 𐬯𐬭𐬏 (srū, “horn, claw, talon”), 𐬯𐬭𐬎𐬎𐬁 (sruuā, “horn”), Middle Persian [script needed] (slwb' /srū/, “horn, nail”), Persian سرو (soru, “animal horn”). Doublet of hirvi. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱerh₂-; see there for more.
