Etymology

[edit]

saman +‎ aikainen

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /ˈsɑmɑnˌɑi̯kɑi̯nen/, [ˈs̠ɑ̝mɑ̝nˌɑ̝i̯kɑ̝i̯ne̞n]
  • Rhymes: -ɑikɑinen
  • Hyphenation(key): saman‧aikai‧nen

Adjective

[edit]

samanaikainen (comparative samanaikaisempi, superlative samanaikaisin)

  1. simultaneous, coincidental (happening or existing at the same time)

Usage notes

[edit]
  • The term samanaikainen indicates that the compared things or phenomena existed or were created in exactly or almost exactly the same time. If the temporal connection is less precise, e.g. the expression saman aikakauden (contemporaneous, literally of the same period of time) may be used.
Katso muita saman aikakauden töitä nähdäksesi, oliko ajatus silloin yleinen.
Look in other contemporaneous works to see whether that idea was common then.
