From Proto-Finnic *söödäk, from Proto-Uralic *sewe-. Cognate with Finnish syödä and Votic süüvve.

  1. (transitive) to eat
    Ema ütles poisile: "Söö oma supp ära ja sa saad külmast terveks."
    The mother said to the boy, "Eat your soup and you will get better from your cold."
  2. (transitive, of parasitic insects) to bite, to nibble
    Puuk sööb koera ja imeb nii palju verd kui jaksab.
    The tick bites the dog and sucks as much blood as it can.
  3. (transitive, about feelings) to eat away, to torment
    Teda sööb armukadedus.
    He is consumed by jealousy.
    (literally, “Jealousy torments him.”)
