Its Middle Chinese ancestor (MC phjiengH), a chongniu-IV word, would also have yielded unattested doublet **thính; its attested initial ‹s-› likely results from a historical phonological change which yields doublets with ‹s-› vs. ‹th-› like SV readings sất vs. thất from Middle Chinese (MC phjit), SV readings sái vs. thái from Middle Chinese (MC tshajH), native sẹo vs. thẹo (scar), etc.
