[edit]Inherited from Middle Dutch rīmen which is a merger of:
- Old Dutch *rīman, from Proto-West Germanic *rīman, from Proto-Germanic *rīmaną (“to count”), a strong verb.
- Old Dutch *rīmen, from Proto-West Germanic *rīmijan, a weak verb. Analysable as rijm + -en.
In Middle Dutch the verb could still be declined as a strong verb.
