Etymology

From Old Norse rauðr, from Proto-Germanic *raudaz, cognate with English red and German rot. The Germanic adjective goes back to Proto-Indo-European *h₁rewdʰ-, cf. Latin ruber, Ancient Greek ἐρυθρός (eruthrós).
