[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *h₁reyp- (“to tear”), which would make it closely related to rífa (“to tear, rip”), Proto-Germanic *rippōną (“to tear off”), etc. Compare Proto-Indo-Iranian *rayš- (“to be hurt, injured”).
