Etymology

From Proto-Vietic *-jəm (“black, dark”), from Proto-Austroasiatic *jupˀ (“evening, dark”). The unusual onset change is most likely due to the taboo of mentioning dâm. See also the compound dâm bụt (“hibiscus”).

Genetically unrelated to Thai ร่ม (rôm) and Chinese 陰 (MC 'im) (SV: âm) (although could be contaminated). The original meaning of the word was "black", as recorded in minor Vietic languages and Old Vietnamese itself, not "shady".
