Deverbal from ponzoñar, from Vulgar Latin *pōntiōnāre (to poison), alteration of Latin pōtiōnāre, from pōtiō. Alternatively from Vulgar Latin *pōtiōnea, from Latin pōtiō, and a doublet of pozón; compare Portuguese peçonha. Cf. also French poison.
