[edit]Etymology 1
[edit]From Middle Dutch orloven (first attested 1201), which could have been a new formation based on the elements or- + loven (“to praise”) and influenced by oorlof (“permission”). Otherwise, if inherited, from Old Dutch *irlouven, from Proto-Germanic *uzlaubijaną (“to allow, permit”), composed of the same elements.[1] Cognate with Old English ālīefan, German erlauben.
