Etymology

[edit]

Non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese (SV: ). Cognate with Chut [Rục] kumúa.

This item was borrowed sometime after the OC stage, when the rime had already shifted (based on the Chứt lemma, which still preserves the trace of OC pre-initial *k- according to BS, the timing of the borrowing wouldn't have been very far off). For a similar case of borrowing, compare búa.
