[edit]Inherited from Proto-Slavic *lěpìti, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *laip-, from Proto-Indo-European *loyp-éye-ti, causative of *leyp- (“to stick”). Cognate with Sanskrit लेपयति (lepayati, “to smear”), English leave.
