[edit]From lapar, maybe under the influence of a derivative of Proto-Germanic *slarpaną (“to sip, slurp”), this from Proto-Indo-European *srebʰ- (“to sip, slurp, gulp”), cognate with Latin sorbere (“to suck up, imbibe, absorb”), whence sorber (“to sip”).
