[edit]From Proto-Finno-Ugric *lᴕńćɜ (“horsefly, fly”). Cognates include Udmurt лузь (luź).[1][2] The original velar vowel of the first syllable may have become palatal as early as in Pre–Old Hungarian under the influence of the following palatal *ńć, compare hegy and hős.[3]
