[edit]Alongside Latvian ciems (“village”), a Germanic borrowing ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱóymos, from *ḱey- (“to settle”); compare Old Norse heimr (“home, world”).[1] Related to šeima (“family”), kaimas (“village”).
