[edit]From Proto-Finnic *kabëh, borrowed from Proto-Germanic *skapiz (compare Proto-Germanic *skapą, Old English gesceap). Cognate with Estonian kabu, Karelian kaveh, Võro kabo and Proto-Samic *kuopës (“witch”).
