Iiri karask ehk soodaleib

Etymology

[edit]

Probably borrowed from Latvian karaša (dialectal Latvian karaška). Loaning in the opposite direction (i.e., from Estonian into Latvian) has also been proposed. Another theory suggests a derivation from the stem, which occurs in karge (rough, coarse) (from Proto-Finnic *karkëda), compare karastama (to harden).

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /ˈkɑrɑsk/, [ˈkɑrɑsk]
  • Rhymes: -ɑrɑsk
  • Hyphenation: ka‧rask
