From Proto-Germanic *kaldaz, whence also Old English cald, Old Frisian kald, Old Saxon kald, Old High German kalt, Gothic 𐌺𐌰𐌻𐌳𐍃 (kalds). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gel-.
