From Proto-Finnic *kaak'attadak, of onomatopoeic origin. Cognate to Finnish kaakattaa and Ingrian kaakattaa. Compare also Northern Sami gahkkat, gahkkit (to cackle), and dialectal Latvian kākāt (to cackle).
