From French hiéroglyphe, backformation from the adjective hiéroglyphique, via Latin hieroglyphicus from Ancient Greek ἱερογλυφικός (hierogluphikós), from ἱερός (hierós, holy) +‎ γλυφή (gluphḗ, to carving) +‎ -ικός (-ikós).
