Late 16th century borrowing from New Latin glōttis, from Ancient Greek γλωττῐ́ς (glōttís, mouth of the windpipe), from γλῶττᾰ (glôtta, tongue) +‎ -ῐς (-is, feminine noun suffix). Cognates include Latin gula.
