Etymology

Borrowed from New Latin epiglōttis, from Ancient Greek ἐπῐγλωττῐ́ς (epiglōttís, valve covering the larynx), from ἐπῐ- (epi-, upon, over) +‎ γλωττῐ́ς (glōttís, glottis, mouth of the windpipe); equivalent to epi- (upon; above) +‎ glottis.
