From Late Latin epiglottidem, from Ancient Greek ἐπιγλωττίς (epiglōttís) derived from γλῶττα (glôtta), variant of γλῶσσα (glôssa, tongue). By surface analysis, epi- (above”, “over) +‎ glottide (glottis).
