Etymology

From Middle English glimeren, glemeren (to glimmer), equivalent to glim (to shine) +‎ -er (frequentative suffix). Cognate with German Low German glimmern (to glimmer), German glimmern (to glimmer), Danish glimre (to glimmer), Swedish glimra (to glimmer). Doublet of glimpse.
