- (North Central Vietnam) trựa (dialects with the ngã-nặng merger)
Etymology
[edit]Cognate with Tho [Cuối Chăm] kʰrɐː⁶.
The mainstream Vietnamese form underwent the uncommon but attested *C-r- > ‹gi-› shift instead of regular *C-r- > ‹s-›. The North Central forms exhibit the local frequent shift *C-r- > *C-l-. For the correspondence, compare mainstream già vs. North Central tra (“old”), mainstream giòi vs. North Central troi (“maggot”).
Northern Old Vietnamese in the earliest Nôm texts in already showed cluster simplification (with its usage of 字 (MC dziH) as phonetic), while the contemporary Old Vietnamese form ancestral to the modern North Central forms certainly still had the consonant cluster at the time.
