Etymology

From Old Anatolian Turkish گرك (gäräk), ultimately from Proto-Turkic *kẹrge- (need),[1] whence also Azerbaijani gərəkmək. Cognate with Old Turkic 𐰚𐰼𐰏𐰚 (kergek /⁠kr²gk⁠/).[2]
