[edit]From Proto-Germanic *fōdijaną, from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂-. Cognate with Old Saxon fōdian, Dutch voeden, Old High German fuoten, Old Norse fǿða (Danish føde, Swedish föda, Icelandic fæða), Gothic 𐍆𐍉𐌳𐌾𐌰𐌽 (fōdjan).
