erkalten (weak, third-person singular present erkaltet, past tense erkaltete, past participle erkaltet, auxiliary sein) (intransitive, higher register)

  1. (literal, chiefly of food, molten metal, lava) to become cold, to cool down to air temperature, to lose all heat or warmth

  2. (figurative, of feelings) to grow cold, weak, lose all intensity
Ihre Liebe war erkaltet.Their love had grown cold.

Usage notes

  • Erkalten is different from abkühlen, which means any reduction of temperature, thus not necessarily down to air temperature.
