German
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Middle High German erkalten, from Old High German irkaltēn, irkaltōn. Equivalent to er- + kalt + -en.
Pronunciation
[edit]Verb
[edit]erkalten (weak, third-person singular present erkaltet, past tense erkaltete, past participle erkaltet, auxiliary sein) (intransitive, higher register)
- (literal, chiefly of food, molten metal, lava) to become cold, to cool down to air temperature, to lose all heat or warmth
- (figurative, of feelings) to grow cold, weak, lose all intensity
- Ihre Liebe war erkaltet. ― Their love had grown cold.
Usage notes
[edit]- Erkalten is different from abkühlen, which means any reduction of temperature, thus not necessarily down to air temperature.
