[edit]Etymology
[edit]endokrin + -logi, first part first part endo-, from Ancient Greek ἔνδον (éndon, “in, within”), from Proto-Hellenic *éndon, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁n̥dóm, from *h₁n̥dó (“into, inside”), from both *h₁én (“in”) and *do (and, but; towards) + middle part -krin, from Ancient Greek κρίνω (krínō, “to separate”), from Proto-Hellenic *kríňňō, from Proto-Indo-European *kri-n-ye-, from *krey- (“to sift, separate, divide”). Last part from Ancient Greek -λογία (-logía), from both λόγος (lógos, “explanation”) (with the suffix -ῐ́ᾱ (-íā, abstract noun suffix), from Proto-Indo-European *-i-eh₂ (creates collective nouns)), from λέγω (légō, “I say, speak”), from Proto-Indo-European *leǵ- (“to gather, collect”).
