[edit]From Middle Dutch *dronen, from Old Dutch *drunen, from Frankish *drunnjan; the long vowel /øː/ precludes a derivation from a hypothetical Proto-Germanic *drunjaną.
Cognate to Middle Low German dronen, Old Norse drynja, and also related to Gothic 𐌳𐍂𐌿𐌽𐌾𐌿𐍃 (drunjus).
