From Middle Dutch behoeven, from Old Dutch *bihuovon, from Proto-Germanic *bihōbōną. Equivalent to be- +‎ hoeven. Cognate with English behove (to be necessary for), obsolete German behufen (cf. Behuf), Danish behøve (to need), Norwegian behøve (to need), Swedish behöva (to have use for, to need).
