[edit]From tol, atol, from Proto-Celtic *tullon, *tullos (“hole”), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)tew- (“to push, hit”) (Old Irish toll, Breton toull, Welsh twll). Cognate with Portuguese atolar and Spanish atollar.
