Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from Late Old Swedish apina, apinia (compare Swedish apinja), from Old Norse apynja (female monkey). Compare Old Norse api.

Pronunciation

[edit]

Noun

[edit]

apina

  1. (zoology) simian (ape, monkey or human; animal belonging to the infraorder Simiiformes within the order Primates)
  2. monkey (any nonhuman simian primate)
Simpanssien tiedetään muodostavan laumoja ja metsästävän muita apinoita.
Chimpanzees are known to form bands to hunt and kill other monkeys.
  3. (informal, derogatory) ape (uncivilized person)

Usage notes

[edit]
  • In zoology, apina means any simian, including humans. In everyday language, apina is understood to refer to any simian except humans. In English "monkey" can be used similarly, but "ape" normally refers only to the most human-like simians of the clade Hominoidea, which the Finnish may call ihmisapina but usually don't, using mere apina instead.
