[edit]From Ottoman Turkish آلت طرف (alt taraf, “the place or part lower down; the sequel of a thing, continuation”),[1][2] from آلت (alt) and طرف (taraf),[3][4] equivalent to alt (“lower, below, bottom”) + taraf (“side, face”) + -ı (possessive suffix), literally “the lower or bottom side”.
