Etymology

From Ottoman Turkish آلت طرف (alt taraf, “the place or part lower down; the sequel of a thing, continuation”), from آلت (alt) and طرف (taraf), equivalent to alt (“lower, below, bottom”) +‎ taraf (“side, face”) +‎ -ı (possessive suffix), literally “the lower or bottom side”.
