[edit]Inherited from Ottoman Turkish ال آلتندن (el altından),[1][2] from ال (al, el) and آلت (alt),[3][4] equivalent to el (“hand”) + alt (“under, lower, bottom”) + -ı (possessive suffix) + -(n)dan (ablative suffix with "n" as buffer consonant), literally “from under the hand”. Cognates with Azerbaijani əl altından.
