Documented during the 14th and 15th century. From Old French herberger (to shelter), ultimately from Proto-West Germanic *harjabergu.

    • 1357, E. Cal Pardo, editor, "De Viveiro en la Edad Media", Estudios Mindonienses, 7, page 140:
      Et eu, o dito Domingo Franco, soo a esto presente et assy o reçebo et demays outorgo por min et por minna uos et por meus herdeyros a pagar os ditos çen mor. cada anno, segundo sobredito he, et de abreger todo quanto se en esta carta conten por min et por meus bees.
      And I, Domingo Franco, being present, receipt and also grant, for me and my right and my heirs, to pay the aforementioned hundred maravedis each year, as has been said before; and to keep everything contained in this charter, for me and for my possessions
