Title

[edit]

In the header "Foreign word of the day in [lang]", it seems a bit pointless to link to the Wiktionary definition of lang. Better would be a link to [:Category:lang language], which has more basic information than most of the definitions do, and also presents all the relevant sub-categories. Ƿidsiþ 10:05, 20 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

It also links to sister-project pages about the language. Sounds good to me. — Ungoliant (Falai) 13:21, 20 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
For German or Spanish, sure. But with the really small languages, for which we often have less than ten entries and an incomplete category system, I'd prefer we didn't. Maybe we can have an #ifexist override in {{FWOTD}} for this? --Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 13:40, 20 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Date

[edit]

I notice that the English WOTD has the date in the header, while FWOTD doesn't. Is this intentional? —CodeCat 12:43, 25 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Yes. It doesn’t need more clutter. The date of today’s Foreign Word of the Day is always... today! — Ungoliant (Falai) 12:48, 25 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
On the main page it is, yes. But not anywhere else, like in the archives, or on this page itself. —CodeCat 12:51, 25 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
In both cases the heading above {{FWOTD}} displays the date. — Ungoliant (Falai) 13:09, 25 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Move all subpages of WT:Foreign Word of the Day/Archive to WT:Foreign Word of the Day?

[edit]

Looking at it now, it seems that it's rather pointless to have a separate subpage just for the archive. They could just as well be put directly under the main FWOTD page. The archive page itself could be merged into this one; there is a little space at the bottom of this page where it would fit perfectly. Is everyone ok with that? —CodeCat 20:27, 30 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

I’m ok with it. — Ungoliant (Falai) 03:19, 1 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
Ditto. --Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 03:48, 1 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
I've done the move and fixed all the links and redirects. It does look a bit nicer now, looking at Special:PrefixIndex/Wiktionary:Foreign Word of the Day. But I noticed the actual FWOTD pages are not subpages of the month pages. Wiktionary:Foreign Word of the Day/2012/October 1 is not a subpage of Wiktionary:Foreign Word of the Day/2012/October. Should I change this as well? —CodeCat 11:45, 1 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Today's FWOTD

[edit]

I know I'm not the usual FWOTD selector, but there was none for today, so I quickly added . Hope I didn't step on anyone's toes. —Angr 09:45, 2 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Forgot other etymology for March 11

[edit]

I added hen#Swedish as FWOTD for March 11, but I completely forgot the second etymology, the one with the definition "whetstone". Could some admin add it? I think it would just need a second set of the template with this code:

{{FWOTD|sv|hen|||(''archaic'', ''dialectal'') a [[whetstone]], particularly the small and soft kind|pos=noun}}

Peter Isotalo 22:53, 9 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

The template accepts multiple definitions, but not multiple parts of speech (in a way that won’t look weird). It doesn’t really need to be added though, unless you prefer this definition to be featured instead of the pronoun. — Ungoliant (Falai) 23:07, 9 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Ah, thanks. I thought it had to be included. But in that case, the pronoun will suffice on its own.

Pronunciation sound byte

[edit]

Just a polite suggestion, I tender that the Wiktionary Foreign Word Of The Day should have a pronunciation sound byte as standard. Thank you all for your global offering. 124.187.28.193 12:38, 5 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

We include them when we can, but it would be unfeasible to expect them all to have one. After all, many of our FWOTDs are in extinct or endangered languages for which it would be difficult or impossible to get a recording of a native speaker. Today's FWOTD, for example, is in Ancient Egyptian, and no one knows for sure how that was pronounced. —Aɴɢʀ (talk) 13:42, 5 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Few FL terms have an audio, even for major modern languages. — Ungoliant (falai) 20:52, 5 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Why it's too few words on Cyrillic?

[edit]

There are too few words on languages, which used Cyrillic script. Almost nothing. Almost nothing neither Russian nor another Cyrillic languages. This is a disrespect to all languages on Cyrillic! --Brateevsky (talk) 12:01, 23 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

(Foreign) word(s) of the year

May 9

[edit]

There wasn't any FWOTD for today, so I put Spanish cuatro gatos. --Per utramque cavernam 10:31, 9 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

A word for 16 April

[edit]

@Lingo Bingo Dingo There seems to be no word for 16 April yet. Given that it's Holy Saturday, I thought I'd find a fittingly Easter-themed entry for it, and now, rove and ropeellinen are ready to go. They're fitting, while also silly in their specificity. brittletheories (talk) 08:14, 14 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

They are nice words, but there is already a Finnish FWOTD set for this month. However, I shall keep those words in mind for coming years. ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 19:16, 14 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Foreign word of the day in a specific foreign language?

[edit]

Might it be possible for a Wiktionary user to specify a language (or two or three) for their "Foreign word of the day" to come up in?

Would be helpful to use the language(s) one is learning, and would likely increase the number of users who care to regularly click on this wonderful feature of Wiktionary.

Cheers, —N2e (talk) 13:53, 7 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

I was also thinking something similar. It might be useful to have an index of all the FWOTD in a certain languages. For example, a List of Wiktionary Foreign Words of the Day in Catalan. Your suggestion would be great for L2 learning. Frosty.brandon (talk) 14:35, 3 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Frosty.brandon: There are lists at Category:Foreign words of the day by language. The category is Category:Foreign words of the day in Catalan. J3133 (talk) 20:50, 3 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
