Welcome!

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contribution so far. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

  • How to edit a page is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.
  • Entry layout explained (ELE) is a detailed policy documenting how Wiktionary pages should be formatted. All entries should conform to this standard, the easiest way to do this is to copy exactly an existing page for a similar word.
  • Our Criteria for inclusion (CFI) define exactly which words Wiktionary is interested in including. There is also a list of things that Wiktionary is not for a higher level overview.
  • The FAQ aims to answer most of your remaining questions, and there are several help pages that you can browse for more information.
  • We have discussion rooms in which you can ask any question about Wiktionary or its entries, a glossary of our technical jargon, and some hints for dealing with the more common communication issues.

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wiktionarian! If you have any questions, bring them to the Wiktionary:Information desk, or ask me on my talk page. If you do so, please sign your posts with four tildes: ~~~~ which automatically produces your username and the current date and time.

Again, welcome! — Carolina wren discussió 16:09, 27 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

prius

[edit]

Please note that even if the trademark did meet CFI, it would go in an entry for Prius, as Wikitionary is case sensitive. However to meet CFI, it needs to be used in some manner that does not refer strictly to the products marketed under that brand. For example, Cadillac has been used for objects other than Cadillac cars to indicate their excellence. — Carolina wren discussió 16:09, 27 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

FreeRice

[edit]

Where do these words come from and what do they mean? I've deleted them for now as the definitions were incomprehensible to a native English speaker. Mglovesfun (talk) 15:25, 12 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

When you play the word definition game on that site, as soon as you hit levels 50+, you'll run into many words that are not yet on Wiktionary. Even if you get the answer wrong, the next page shows you the correct definition.
I suppose that in the future, when I put up new words found on FreeRice not yet on Wiktionary, I'll find a second source to link to that backs up the new word's definition. (Example: Another dictionary site.) --Widjedi 15:51, 12 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
We don't accept words found only in dictionaries. They have to be actually used, by real people, in the real world. SemperBlotto 15:57, 12 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
No problem; then I'll find and put in Google Books citations, and other citations that they're actually used in the ways you describe. --Widjedi 16:09, 12 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

white trash

[edit]

Probably best to avoid an etymology here because of the large number of possibilities. Basically white (skin color) + trash (garbage) covers it. Mglovesfun (talk) 06:04, 25 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

kindergartner

That you don't recognize the definition does not mean it's wrong. You should do research before removing a definition, especially one that's been there for a long time, and one that other dictionaries have also, as in this case. If you doubt it, instead of removing it, add {{rfv-sense}} to it (and follow the "+" link in what results to add the request for verification to [[WT:RFV]]).—msh210 19:43, 2 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
