Welcome

[edit]

Welcome!

Hello, and welcome to Wiktionary. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wiktionarian! By the way, you can sign your name on Talk (discussion) and vote pages using four tildes, like this: ~~~~, which automatically produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to one of the discussion rooms or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! --Ivan Štambuk 10:32, 25 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Code "fy"

[edit]

Hi! When ISO coded the other two Frisian languages (stq and frr), they assigned fry=fy. They did not redefine fy as a macrolanguage, just added the other two which were needed. So "fy" is still "West Frisian"

For lots of technical reasons, the template text must match the name we are using in headers, categories, and translation tables. Where Atelaes got the idea that it should be just "Frisian" I have no idea ...

Thanks, Robert Ullmann 13:13, 25 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

What does "RFC" have to do with it? These are ISO standards. (Ignore rfc:3066 etc, it is a derived document, and often has errors...) ;-) Robert Ullmann 13:28, 25 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Sorry to add to your agony... I put a little remark on the village pump of the fy:wiki to ask for help: I am Dutch not Frisian and I think they should sort this out. The Dutch wikipedia might be another place perhaps. A lot of Frisians there too.

West Frisian dude

[edit]

I'm very glad you're back :) I hope you'll eventually completely empty up Category:Frisian language in favour of individual subcategories of Category:Frisian languages. I've moved your conjugation template into new category: Category:West Frisian conjugation templates, in accordance with the common naming scheme employed for all other languages. If you want to add inflected verb forms, create Category:West Frisian verb forms. --Ivan Štambuk 18:45, 31 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Use ofs for Old Frisian. --Ivan Štambuk 16:16, 2 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

new entry templates

[edit]

Just a note: you could save yourself trouble by using {{subst:PAGENAME}} instead of {{(1}}} (and then changing 2 to 1 of course). Or is there a reason why the headword shouldn't be exactly = the title? Robert Ullmann 13:19, 1 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Your signature

[edit]

Hi, it's very confusing that you sign your posts with Winter or Winterxx, as then people can't instantly see who you are (particularly as User:Winter does exist, though they haven't contributed yet). Is there any chance you could use a signature that more closely resembles your username (see WT:USER), or is there a good reason not to do this? Conrad.Irwin 11:48, 2 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thank you very much. Conrad.Irwin 12:40, 2 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
You are going to use a different username? Robert Ullmann 12:42, 2 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
of course, we welcome your contributions ... are you using a common username on more than one project? Whatever you like, Conrad had just pointed out that .sigs should somehow resemble the username. (We do have user "Opterain" who signs "Ric", but since that is his real name ... ;-). Robert Ullmann 13:06, 2 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
See WT:CHU for changing username. Conrad.Irwin 13:03, 2 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

dogge

[edit]

Hello there, please have a look at my tidy up of your edits to dogge. These follow the normal convention for formatting which is covered in some detail at WT:ELE.--Williamsayers79 11:32, 6 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Replied on Billy's talk page. (Me)
Please also be inspired by my cleanup of stik. Have you read WT:ELE? H. (talk) 13:28, 13 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Replied on Hamaryns' talk page. (Me)

On second thought, I think I'm going to punt on adding any new information to any of these entries. I'm going to stick to the original task I accepted: Categorising the 300 "Frisian language" entries (which actually turned out to be more like 500) into the appropriate languages West Frisian, North Frisian and Saterland Frisian. Cheers. Snakesteuben 13:55, 13 April 2008 (UTC) [Edit: move older text above newer. I'm confusing myself here. (Me)]Reply

Cheers. (The s is part of my name, btw.) I did not intend to point to the ‘also’, which is, on the afterthought, good; I suppose it should be put in a {{context}} tag. I will re-add it. I was rather trying to point out the formatting matters: no line at the bottom, example sentences italicized (no ‘Example’), the word cited in bold. Please keep discussion here. H. Truly sorry about that. Spending too much time on the German site, no doubt. Will keep discussion here. Thanks again. I will look at the entry again after you've had plenty of time to play with it, so I can see what you did about the also/context tag. Snakesteuben 14:03, 13 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello! Thank you!

[edit]

Thanks a lot for the Mongolian part of Babel! I had no idea how to mess with that so I decided just to leave it be.

I don't suppose you can work up an Uzbek-1 as well?

Thanks again!

Winged eel 11:36, 6 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

According to the site the code for Uzbek seems to be, "uz". Does that sound about right?

Winged eel 11:46, 6 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, it works great!

Hello!

[edit]

Hello, thanks for your replies on my page, I'd just like to say that most of the admins here are happy to answer questions, especially for those who put in the effort to tidy up entries. Well done with the hard work so far - I had been wondering when someone would tidy up the Frisian entries. Regards, --Williamsayers79 11:18, 11 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Userboxes

[edit]

Hi, just as a warning Wiktionary voted (for good reasons, though it seemed strange to me at first) not to allow any userboxes. I can't see anyone making a fuss about User:Snakesteuben/Template:Buddy-EG as it is reasonably relevant to Wiktionary, but you never know around here ;). See WT:USER and Wiktionary:Votes/pl-2007-08/Babel_userboxes. Conrad.Irwin 19:52, 12 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Deletion etc.

[edit]

Hi Snakesteuben (again ;). I was looking at your userpage and wondering what exactly it is you want deleting, I am assuming the Categories themselves? Do you know you can just put {{delete}} on stuff and the sysops will find it through WT:CSD. Conrad.Irwin 17:08, 13 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Discussion you may be abel to help with

[edit]

Hello

As someone who seems knowledgeable about Frisian languages, you might be able to help out in a discussion that is taking place at Template talk:etyl#Limitations.

Common names for species

[edit]

I noted that your were asking about entries for vernacular names for species. I think that those names and their component individual words are useful entries. Wiktionary can perform a valuable service by linking multiple vernacular names to individual species and linking each vernacular name to all the species or genera that might be covered by it. Wikispecies is good at the taxonomic names. A complete entry would include links to WP, WSp, and have a picture from WikiCommons. You should be able to figure out how to speed the process of making the complete entry. See musclewood and it links. DCDuring TALK 13:02, 12 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

While I'm assuming this is West Frisian, I think it better to have someone look at it who knows what they're talking about. Many thanks. -Atelaes λάλει ἐμοί 02:28, 20 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Category:Saterland Frisian articles

[edit]

I hope that I'm at the right place here. Could you please remove Winterbot from the category Category:Saterland Frisian articles? I added all the Saterland Frisian articles to Wiktionary and I even made a nice table for a quick overview. In short: the category is complete, except for your bot being in the category. Best regards,SK luuut 01:16, 30 December 2008 (UTC) P.S. I'm looking forward for those 16k Saterland Frisian entries.Reply

I realised that I could do it myself as well. Thank you very much-SK luuut 01:22, 30 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
