Note: In assembling this archive, I've reunited some conversations that were previously spread across multiple discussion pages. Comments in green (like this) are comments brought here from other users' talk-pages. (My apologies if your link colors are such that this makes links hard to read.)

Welcome

[edit]

(I'm not sure how you made it this long without being welcomed, but here is one...) Welcome!

Hello, and welcome to Wiktionary. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wiktionarian! By the way, you can sign your name on Talk (discussion) and vote pages using four tildes, like this: ~~~~, which automatically produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the beer parlour or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! —Dvortygirl 14:50, 17 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the welcome! I was starting to wonder if maybe Wiktionary wasn't as friendly as Wikipedia. :-) Ruakh 00:28, 20 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
It's not that we're less friendly (to the contrary, I've met some of the friendliest people I know here, and it's a smaller, more intimate community). Because we're smaller, though, we're not quite as well "staffed" with folks welcoming newcomers, and it's a bit hit or miss. Please don't take it personally. —Dvortygirl 03:06, 20 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Don't worry, I really wasn't being serious. All's good. :-) Ruakh 03:22, 20 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hebrew help

[edit]

Hello, could you check the Hebrew translation(s) for the word listen, and make sure they are listed in the correct section? Thanks, --EncycloPetey 02:47, 4 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for adding the Hebrew, but did you notice that the translations are separated by sense? Did you intend to put both translations under the same meaning? --EncycloPetey 03:39, 5 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I noticed. [hik'ʃiv] replace ' with ˈ, invalid IPA characters (') and [ʔi'zɛn] replace ' with ˈ, invalid IPA characters (') are almost completely synonymous; the second is a bit more formal, and has a slight connotation of listening to speech specifically rather than to sound generally, but the two are fairly interchangeable.
