[edit]Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.
If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.
These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:
- Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
- Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
- Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
- If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
- If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
- Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (
~~~~
) which automatically produces your username and timestamp. - You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.
Your Gothic words
[edit]I noticed that you created a page with some made-up Gothic words. The Germanic descendant of *h₁n̥gʷnis would be *unkniz, *unkuniz or similar, although I presume that the consonant cluster would be simplified to something like *unniz. This would then be *unkns, *unkuns, *unns in Gothic, and it would be an i-stem. —CodeCat 20:59, 15 December 2013 (UTC)
thanks for the tip
[edit]I think the Gothic word would be ugkns because the proto-germanic nk* became Gothic gk. For example, *ugkns, *ugkuns, *unns possibly. I try to have fun with Gothic, like what you did with Proto-Germanic. Moonspell Bloodlines (talk) 21:17, 15 December 2013 (UTC)
- Gothic gk is just a way of spelling nk that it got from Ancient Greek, which has words like παγκράτιον (pankrátion, “all-powerful”).
- As for having fun, that's all well and good, but the main purpose for user pages is to help in the task of editing the dictionary. We tend to give a lot more leeway to someone like CodeCat, who's making monumental contributions on a daily basis, than to someone who hasn't contributed anything to the dictionary beyond a single edit that had to be deleted because we don't allow made-up terms in the main dictionary. Just a word of warning: I have no intention of deleting your subpages, but there are others who might, if that's all you're ever going to work on (see WT:USER). - I understand, and i know that there is thousands of Gothic words not yet with entries, but they do have romanizations. I've been trying to look at what those words are, but the net doesn't really have any information on them, what can we do to improve that? Moonspell Bloodlines (talk) 06:21, 16 December 2013 (UTC)
Translation
[edit]Hello, could you translate Automatic refresh (Latin: Renovatio automatica) to Gothic language? Thanks! :) -XQV- (talk) 14:28, 21 October 2016 (UTC)
